84. The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls

I have just watched a film of two yodelling lesbians from New Zealand - and really liked it!
Mind you, I can hardly claim to have been unique is enjoying the humour of the Topp Twins, after all, they are a Kiwi institution.
Lynda and Jools are one of the most unusual acts not just in what they bring to the stage but their attitude towards their fans and life in general.
They are fiercely committed to social justice in a way Bob Geldof would be proud (left-wing campaigner Billy Bragg is a contributor to Leanne Pooley's film).
But what I couldn't get over is the way that they have spurned the trappings of stardom.
The transport on one of their tours was literally and old-style gypsy caravan, pulled by a tractor which could only travel at 15 miles per hour. They drove to dozens of remote venues where people queued for hundreds of yards to see them in community centres.
Their stardom seems to have completely unaffected them. When Jools had cancer a couple of years ago, Lynda stayed for eight months to help look after her, living in a caravan at the end of her drive.
They put their grounded attitudes down to being brought up on a New Zealand farm. It has made them snub the glitz and the limos.
It means they still play at country fairs and even reprise their early years of busking to raise funds for worthy causes.
This documentary shows them on stage, singing their self-penned tunes as themselves or their comedy characters.
It also includes deeply honest interviews with Jools and Lynda about their sexuality, their involvement in protests and their philosophies on life. Alongside are words from their loved ones and celebrity fans.
This is all intermingled with footage of their career since they started out in the early 80s.
Before seeing this screener, sent kindly by James at November Films, I had never heard of the Topp Twins.
Now, after a really entertaining 84 minutes, I'm really pleased this 2009 Kiwi film has been released in the UK.
Laughs: plenty of chortles
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 7.5/10
