61. Harvest (Stadt Fluss Land)

Well I'd heard stories about how passions are aroused at those young farmers' parties - apparently it's the same in Germany.
Harvest is a slow (fans may say simmering) film which spends the best part of an hour laying down the foundation for a love story between two young men.
Marco (Lukas Steltner)  has been on his own since leaving his alcoholic mother when he was 17.
He is a stern young fella who takes his training down on the farm seriously and interacts very little with the other young apprentices
His Achilles heel, however, is that he struggles hopelessly with the written work which he must complete to get through his course.
Jakob (Kai-Michael Muller) comes from a more stable background and has more ambitious dreams and it is with him that Marco at last finds a connection.
Their eventual liaison has echoes of Brokeback Mountain - a slow lead-up, and Marco's initial denial of his feelings against a macho background.
To give director and writer Benjamin Cantu credit, he has avoided the usual stereotypes of gay films I've seen.
Thankfully, there is no drug-taking (Marco doesn't even drink) and no outrageous promiscuity (sex is alluded to but not seen).
It is just a quiet (if sometimes too quiet) love story.
Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: lots of six packs but that's it.
Overall rating: 6/10
