36. Underworld: Awakening

How ironic that during a movie which has awakening in the title I should be fighting so hard no to fall asleep.
For the second time this year (War Horse was the last), Mrs W and I were at odds over a movie.
You see, I have to admit that she and Master W like all this fantasy sci-fi nonsense. I, on the other hand, couldn't get to grips with Star Wars and Lord Of The Rings, let along this vampire/lycan malarkey.
I saw the last Underworld a couple of years ago and apart from recalling that Michael Sheen looked incredibly out of place, can't remember anything about it.
Not that this made much of a difference to my indifference towards the lastest in the Underworld franchise. Mrs W hadn't seen any before but enjoyed it.
I guess it wasn't helped by the fact that it was incredibly dark (literally - I couldn't make out what on earth was going on) and the plot didn't grab me.
For the record, our vampire heroine (Kate Beckinsale) has awoken from being frozen for 12 years after her last battle with the Lycans.
In that time the Lycans have been almost entirely killed off by humans.
And there is something else that has happened. A human/vampire/lycan hybrid (India Eisley) had been born. I couldn't work out whether this was our Kate's daughter or she had been created by scientists but, regardless, she seemed to have the attributes of all species.
As Kate, alias Selene, tries to protect her, she also has to lead the vampires against human.
In this she is joined by Theo James, who plays the son of the anti-violence vampire (?) (Charles Dance).
I really didn't care who lived or died because I couldn't see through the darkness but what I could tell was that the plot was pretty much replaced by 90 minutes of CGI battles.
Mrs W insisted this CGI was top quality but I couldn't help think the Lycans reminded me of the monsters in Jason and The Argonauts.
Laughs: No face crackers.
Jumps: None for me but Mrs W claimed two.
Vomit: None - although I have had to confirm there wasn't any when my eyelids became particularly heavy.
Nudity: The Lycans were naked in wolf form...does that count? No...in that case, none
Rating: She says 6/10, I say 4/10, so the average is...5/10
