32. Haywire

Forgive me if this sounds super smug but I can't remember being envious of a woman before.
Actually, I must be really lucky. It's a rare day that I'm envious of anyone but I must confess women seem to have it tougher than guys so I'd never wanted to be one.
But, let's face it, it must be great to be Gina Carano right now.
Gina started life as the child of a American football quarter-back. In other words the most glamourous player in the team.
Anyway, while at school she led her basketball team to the state title then she went off to university in Las Vegas (that must be the coolest place to study in the world) and came back with a psychology major.
If that wasn't enough, she then started in the world of martial arts and became world renown both in kick boxing and mixed martial arts.
Tonight I saw her put her fighting prowess to the test in a Steven Soderbergh movie in which she claimed top billing from Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas and Bill Paxton.
In fact, she gave three of them a right good pasting.
Carano plays Mallory who is hired by a private firm to carry out the sort of dirty work in which governments are not officially involved.
She is sent by her boss (McGregor) to help free a hostage in Barcelona. This all goes smoothly but leads to another op in Dublin where things don't quite run to plan.
Haywire is a fast-paced film of double cross. To be honest, the plot wasn't much of a grabber but, in any case, it was always playing second fiddle to the fight and chase scenes.
At first watching Carano being punched in the face over and over seemed, to my male sensibilities, to be terribly wrong.
It soon became clear that she could more than hold her own.
Indeed, I can't think I'll remember Haywire for much else apart from the punch-ups and the fact that Carano was the most fearsome beauty (I'd fogotten to say she's been in Maxim's top 20 hottest women in the world) I've ever seen. Yes, even more than Angelina when she's playing Lara Croft.
