227. JLS - Eyes Wide Open The 3D Movie

The lights went down, a teenage girl shouted "wooooo'' and as her heroes appeared on the screan, another lass muffled a scream.
Of course, the subjects of their adoration, JLS, were not live at Derby Showcase De Lux, they were on the big screen in 3D.
This was a film of their concert at London's O2 Arena, intermingled with some back stage footage.
It took me back to the days when I got press passes to the boy bands' concerts in Nottingham, so I could take my daughter.
Yes, I saw them all...Westlife, Five, A1 (remember them?).
In fact, when JLS made their entrance to the 02 it reminded me of a Blue concert when they also appeared in an open top car.
Blimey, listen to myself. Let's put it straight. There is no way I would have watched this JLS movie if I hadn't have been on the everyfilmin2011 assault.
To be honest, I know bog all about them, having given up watching the X Factor after that pub singer Steve Brrokstein won years ago.
I could hum to a couple of their tunes having heard them on the radio but their music sort of merges in my ear.
That said, I was there to judge the movie and earlier this year I had an open mind when watching Justin Bieber in action and gave him a favourable review.
And there were a couple of things to like here.
The off-stage stuff raised a couple of laughs, particularly over the tearful devotion of their fans at book signings and when the boys held an impromptu karaoke at a Yorkshire pub and handed the mike to one of the locals.
Also, the band themselves seem very decent fellas. They've worked hard to get where they are and speak with passion but also humility.
On stage, however, they just haven't got the experience nor the fame which is associated with a blowaway show.
This, in other words, was no U2 3D nor was it as revealing as the Bieber documentary,
It was homage to a band who have been around for a couple of albums.
Also the 3D was simply irrelevant. I took my glasses off a couple of times and could scarcely tell the difference of what was in front of me.
So thank you again to Katie Mcdernott, the Showcase PR lass who consistently digs me out tickets to films she knows will torment me.
But, on this occasion, I can't really give JLS any more than 5/10 and say let's only see music films with bands who have a decent pedigree please.
