198. Something Borrowed

Isn't it about time that Kate Hudson's best friend had a word.
You know, the sort of conversation that says: "Kate, I know you are a household name and making pots of money but you are on the cusp of blowing your career because of catastrophic film choices.''
Perhaps we'll leave it to her mum Goldie. Oops forgot.. she did exactly the same thing.
Hudson, we thought, was going to be a wow, thanks to her fabulous performance in Almost Famous.
But that is ten years ago now.
You would have thought she might have got the hint in 2009 when she was nominated for two Razzies for the dreadful Fool's Gold and almost-as-lame Best Friend's Girl.
Sadly, this year is promising to trawl the gutter too, because her follow up to the ghastly A Little Bit Of Heaven is this pile of gunk.
Anyone who saw The Killer Inside Me last year will confirm Kate has still got star quality but she clearly cannot resist the temptation of playing a screeching airhead.
Here, she goes through the motions in a movie which is simply unlovable.
The premise is that she is about to marry the chap who her best friend has had a crush on since college days.
Worse still, the said best friend Ginnifer Goodwin sleeps with him before the end of the opening credits.
We are then left with nearly two hours of who-will-finally-end-up-with-who while other unrequited love episodes rear their heads.
The suggestion from the trailer is that this is a comedy.
My face didn't crack once, although my lips might have momentarily turned upwards when John Krasinski hit the screen. He comes away from the wreckage with at least a morsel of credit.
Unlike the other male lead, Colin Egglesfield, who is simply robotic. That is a bit of a problem because he is meant to be so fantastic that Hudson and Goodwin would jeopardise everything to be his belle.
And another thing...I hate it when an obviously super attractive person is playing a nerd.
Goodwin's character speaks like she is a geeky moose but in reality she is probably prettier in many people's eyes than Hudson.
The truth is I just didn't care where Something Borrowed was going after about two minutes. The fact that I stuck with it shows that I am a masochist and everyfilmin2011 is occasionally my means of self-flagellation (look it up).
What's it worth? Thanks to Mr Krasinski's manful efforts - 3.5/10.
