Hey, we were down with the kids.
It was 6.30pm on a Saturday night in central Nottingham and screen 8 at Cineworld was busy...very busy.
And Mrs W and I were old enough to be the parents of pretty much everyone else in the auditorium.
This was just another in a list of warning signs which were flashing in my head before the start of 21 Jump Street.
The others included the fact that the trailer had made the movie seem the most unfunny of the year and that the combination of Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill didn't exactly inspire me.
Oh, and despite being a child of the 80s, I have never seen the TV series of 21 Jump Street.
But, before you turn away and condemn me as an old fuddy duddy, let me tell you that Phil Lord and Chris Miller's movie is a winner.
What's the story?
Well, Hill plays the bright but physically challenged police cadet who teams up with his high school nemisis Tatum who has exactly the opposite attributes.
They are assigned to an undercover operation at a high school where drugs are being peddled.
Tatum sees the opeartion as a breeze because he was super popular at school while the op brings back Hill's anxieties because he was the class nerd.
However, school has changed a lot since then as they both discover.
And, of course, being the irresponsible pair that they are, they don't exactly play things by the rules.
Obviously, I've seen Hill in a lot of comedies but this is another occasion in which Tatum has surprised me. Previously, I've seen him dance (Step Up), do the all-action thing (Fighting), jerk the tears (Dear John and The Vow) but not indulge in physical comedy.
His range is growing by the film and if he isn't a Hollywood a-lister already, he's on the way to becoming one.
I'm not going to spoil the laughs by saying any more about 21 Jump Street's plot. Suffice to say, it's not as funny as The Muppets but it's certainly worth seeing.
Laughs: Six out loud laughs from me and many more chuckles. Mrs W was more restrained.
Jumps: one
Vomit: a particularly nasty scene in which Tatum throws up over Hill, whose jacket is mysterious clean in the next shot (well spotted, Mrs W).
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 7/10
